Supporting Off-Grid Development Through the Transforming Energy Access Platform
TEA is a flagship FCDO innovation platform that researches and develops new clean energy technologies and the business models needed to deploy them in developing countries to accelerate access to affordable, clean and modern energy for all (SDG7). The platform will run to 2026 and includes a wide range of supporting instruments that will help develop the technologies, business models and skills needed to support the off-grid sector to deploy mini-grids at scale. This presentation will provide an update on programme delivery, exploring the different projects active within the portfolio and some of the key impacts and learnings to date. Projects to be discussed will draw from Growing Government Engagement in Energy Access (GGE-EA) (delivered by Club-ER), the Innovation Lab (delivered by CrossBoundary), the Mini-Grid Partnership (delivered by SE4All), Mainstreaming Mini-Grid Tarif Settlement Tools and Methodologies across African Regulators (MGTS-AR) (delivered by AFUR), the Mini-Grid Funders' Group (MGF) (secretariat provided by Carbon Trust) and a range of mini-grid technology innovations (supported through the Energy Catalyst).
Key Learning Points:
- The Importance of coordinated innovation activity to maximise donor efficacy
- Data-based decisions are essential for innovation roll-out and private sector buy-in
- The critical importance of training for regional regulators and local energy policy makers
Speakers:
Lily BeadleSenior Manager, Programmes & Innovations
The Carbon Trust
Lily is a Senior Manager at the Carbon Trust who designs and implements climate-tech accelerators. She has three key roles. Firstly, as an Innovation Manager providing commercialisation support to companies on the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, which aims to decrease the costs of decarbonisation across the UK. Secondly, as the technology accelerator portfolio lead on the Transforming Energy Access platform, a research and innovation platform supporting the technologies, business models and skills needed to enable an inclusive clean energy transition. Finally, as the project manager of the Zero Emission Generators programme, which aims to advance renewable energy-based alternatives in countries that currently depend on fossil-fueled generators. Her background is in off-grid utilities and software as a service. She helped scale BBOXX into 10 new markets and took part in the YCombinator programme with B2B software start-up, Index.
Gabrielle CoeuilleTransforming Energy Access Delivery Coordinator
The Carbon Trust
Gabrielle is a senior analyst and delivery coordinator at the Carbon Trust for the Transforming Energy Access platform. Gabrielle leads the secretariate for the Mini-Grid Funders Group, supporting actors like the World Bank, AFDB and FCDO in coordinating the development of Mini-Grids through strategy alignment on financing mechanisms. Supporting on a variety of mini-grid centred energy access projects including the Mini-Grid Partnerships project and the Mainstreaming Mini-Grid Tarif Settlement Tools and Methodologies across African Regulators project, Gabrielle has developed an interest in stakeholder engagement within the sector. Gabrielle studied at the University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies and is a Carnegie Scholar for her development of policy recommendations for the Canadian government on arctic waste management. She has a deep passion for supporting the SDG7 goal of universal sustainable energy access.
