Insetting as a Business Model for Microgrids

Pilio will share the results of our feasibility study in Pakistan where we have been developing a cotton insetting scheme to reduce the carbon emissions of fashion brands by enabling them to invest in renewable energy projects that provide their cotton producing communities with affordable and accessible energy. The scheme is a new business model powered by a monitoring and reporting technology platform, which facilitates the financing and implementation of clean energy solutions. The package of solutions tested in the feasibility scheme were solar micro-grids (in 2 configurations), solar powered shops, and clean cook stoves. The scheme is novel in bringing together a consortium of partners to unlock the solution including micro-finance, technology, investors, sustainable cotton certification bodies and implementing project partners. In the presentation Catherine will take the audience through the design, implementation, and insights from testing the solution and the plans for the next phase. The study was supported by Innovate UK's Energy Catalyst programme.

Key Learning Points:
  • The opportunities of insetting for financing solar micro-grid for deployment
  • Viable configurations of solar micro-grids
  • Measuring, monitoring and reporting the environmental and social benefits of solar micro-grids
