Responding to Loadshedding in South Africa
Project SEBA addresses the challenges of load-shedding in South Africa. Load shedding drops power from sections of the grid when generation is insufficient to meet demand. Year-on-year the levels of load-shedding are getting worse, with every single day in 2023 affected! These rolling blackouts cause the temporary formation of multiple microgrids which require generation, storage and demand management. This talk shows how techniques from demand response in the UK have been applied to this urgent problem.
Key Lerning Points:
- How consumers cope with rolling blackouts
- Effects of the change-over from grid-connected to islanded mode
- Need for demand management in microgrids
- Applicability of demand response techniques to islanded microgrids
