Dr. Carolina Barreto is a renewable energy professional with 17+ years of experience in the off-grid and small scale renewable energy sectors. She has designed projects and advised companies from solar home systems to energy-ag and rural electrification of public health facilities in 15 countries while managing multidisciplinary team. She has provided expert advice in the sector to governments, financial institutions, private sector companies, end users, donors, national associations, among other.

Dr. Barreto is currently the Senior Technical Advisor for the Power Africa Off-grid Project providing technical leadership for a team of 22 advisors across 10 SSA countries. As the Senior Technical Advisor, Dr. Barreto provides technical assistance supports 100+ off-grid companies in the SSA market focused on capital raising; regulatory navigation; enabling environment; market intelligence and business development. She was the technical lead for other large off-grid donor funded initiatives such as Powering Health, Powering Agriculture and the Power Africa Beyond the Grid (BTG) Advisor for Kenya. Dr. Barreto has specific country experience in Benin, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Kenya, Kosovo, Mali, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Peru, South Africa, and in the US with the Native American nations. She has a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering, a Masters in Science in Solar Energy and Doctor of Energy Engineering from University of Massachusetts Lowell. She is fluent in French and Spanish.
